Strategic Plan for 2011-2012
- Increase publicity and awareness & membership of CANCAS.
- Send an invitation to department heads at NC institutions to appoint a CANCAS campus student liaison to serve on the CANCAS Board. The liaison should be an active leader in a student organization in the sciences on campus. Additional Campus Liaisons will be appointed at the CANCAS Fall Workshop at Lenoir-Rhyne during the CANCAS Business Meeting.
- Create a unique CANCAS flyer and mail it to Campus Liaisons to be displayed year round. Facebook information will be added to the poster.
- The involvement of students at larger schools will be encouraged by designating CANCAS Campus Liaisons at these institutions and encouraging them to recruit student members through the flyer, student organizations, and Facebook.
- Revitalize the CANCAS Facebook page with new photos and videos, and regular posts.
- First and second year college students will be encouraged to be active members in CANCAS through participation at the CANCAS research/career workshop and NCAS annual meeting. Sessions at the workshop will cater to these younger students in topics such as: finding research mentors and projects, presenting scientific research, and choosing a career path.
- CANCAS officers and members will reach out to the Student Academy of NCAS (NCSAS) to recruit future CANCAS members. NCSAS high school students will attend the 2011 CANCAS Workshop at Lenoir-Rhyne. The NCSAS and CANCAS Boards in communication with the host institution, Lenoir-Rhyne, will work together to plan sessions at the workshop which serve the interests of both the NCSAS and CANCAS students. CANCAS students at the workshop will serve as mentors for the participating NCSAS students
- Encourage CANCAS members to participate in Astronomy Days at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, NC in Spring 2012.
- Prepare CANCAS members for research and careers.
- Focus the CANCAS workshop on both undergraduate research skills and career preparation. Organize a panel of CANCAS students to talk about the college experience including research and career preparations.
- Host graduate school workshop at NCAS meeting at Campbell University. Include at least one professional school panelist, and panelists from different scientific disciplines
