Instructions for the Authors
The Journal of the North Carolina Academy of Science (formerly the Journal of the Elisha Mitchell Scientific Society, Vol. 1-118) is the oldest continuously published state science academy journal in the United States, first published in 1884. The Journal is published quarterly, with one issue in each annual volume of four typically publishing abstracts from the Academy’s Annual Meeting and one issue including the Annual Meeting’s Proceedings. The Journal has recently maintained a relatively rapid processing rate for submittals, with time from submission to publication of (accepted) articles averaging 6-12 months. The Journal publishes scholarly articles in all scientific disciplines; recent articles have addressed topics in biochemistry, behavior, chemistry, genetics, ecology, botany, aquatic ecology, meteorology, mathematics, mammalogy, ichthyology, physiology, and environmental science, among others. The Journal also publishes short Notes, Book reviews, and historical articles about scientific personalities, issues, and programs. Although the focus of many articles is on state and regional issues, the Journal welcomes contributions from all contributors on all scientific topics. The Journal is also receptive to proposals for Special Topics issues dedicated to symposium proceedings or current issues. Prospective Special Topics contributors should discuss proposals with the Editors.
Page charges
As of September 2011, the first 10 printed pages will remain free of page charges. Each printed page in excess of 10 will be assessed a per page charge of $35.
Free Online Access to the Journal
Since 2005, the North Carolina Academy of Science and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Library have partnered in digitizing the Journal of the North Carolina Academy of Science (previously titled the Journal of the Elisha Mitchell Scientific Society). The first seventy volumes, covering the years 1884 to 1954, are accessible on the Internet. The contents of the remaining volumes will go online as they are scanned and should be complete by early 2009. The most current volume, however, will become available only after the next volume begins. Readers have free access to the journal.
